Uruguay’s vice president highly assesses relations with Russia

MONTEVIDEO, July 14. /ITAR-TASS/. Uruguay and Russia have brilliant possibilities for expanding their well-established ties, Uruguayan Vice President Danilo Astroi said in an exclusive interview with ITAR-TASS on Monday.

“Russia is paying ever growing attention to Latin America, and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the region perfectly fits the process of strengthening Russian-Latin American ties,” he said. “It is important for our countries to develop relations with Russia taking into account its fundamental role in the current international relations.”

The Uruguayan vice president is taking part in the founding assembly of the non-government Institute of Bering and Bellingshausen.

“We attach great significance to promoting cooperation with Russia in various areas, including trade, investments, culture, and others,” Astori said, adding the initiative to found the Bering and Bellingshausen Institute “targeted this very goal” and its future activities would serve the cause of strengthening ties between Russia and Latin American countries. Astori expressed confidence that the activities of the institute would make a contribution to “the development of Russian-Latin American relations and would soon materialize in concrete projects.
